Short Story Competition
The themes for the competition center around our upcoming temporary exhibition on the Village Garden Club here in Shaker Heights. The exhibition discusses their rich local history with themes of women's history, social activism, environmentalism, and urban planning. The short story competition will be in response to one of two prompts (or both!) created to fit the themes exhibition.
The prompts are:
Life as a Pollinator
What are some of the struggles of your life as a pollinator? How do you overcome obstacles to pollinate plants and survive? What is your life like from the perspective of a pollinator?
History according to…
This is the year 2080. How has Shaker Heights changed? What do you remember about issues in the community from your perspective? Can you describe the world and what you’ve seen in Shaker Heights over the years you’ve been here? Maybe you’ve moved away, what was it like when you left? When you returned? Why did you leave? Why did you come back?
Depending on entries, first place will be grade/school/age dependent (ie, 9th grade winner, or if less entries, high school winner), and winners will receive a Mitchell's Ice Cream gift card, SHS merchandise, and a 'trophy pen', second prize will receive SHS merchandise and a second place pen, and all entries will receive SHS merchandise.
The competition will run from August 1, 2020 through October 17, 2020 with winners announced October 24, 2020. Entries are to be no more than 1500 words.
