Exhibit Opening: Musings: Drawings from the "Great Pause"
October 7, 2023 | 12-4pm | Shaker Historical Society
To keep her art fresh during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nancy Schwartz-Katz began a drawing a day in her sketchbooks. Musings: Drawings from the "Great Pause" features the artist’s everyday reflections through observational sketches with the public as artistic muse and inspiration. From six-foot distancing in a coffee shop to an open cookbook on a counter, these scenes transform the mundane into a symphony of reflections, vividly depicting the pandemic's “great pause.”
Musings: Drawings from the "Great Pause" opens during the Shaker Historical Society’s free AppleFest community festival on Saturday, October 7 from 12-4pm. This exhibition will be on view through February 4, 2024. Musings is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.

Please note that the museum’s parking lot will be closed to cars and used only for vendors and activities during the duration of the event.

Fall-themed beverages and baked goods will be available for purchase, but we do not have a dedicated food vendor this year.
Can I go inside the museum?
Yes! The museum will be open to the public during AppleFest. Step inside to learn about the Shakers, Van Sweringens, and Warrensville Township. AppleFest also marks the opening of Musings, a new temporary exhibit by local artist Nancy Schwartz-Katz that reflects on COVID through scenes of daily life.
There is a public restroom and a small gift shop on the first floor of the museum. We also have an accessible restroom in our garage.
Is this event dog-friendly?
Yes! Dogs are welcome to join you for AppleFest but must be leashed and with their owner at all times. Dogs are not allowed inside the museum unless they are trained service animals. Please keep in mind that AppleFest may be crowded with a lot of children on the grounds. Only bring your dog if this is a comfortable environment for them. SHS staff reserves the right to request any owners with misbehaving dogs leave the premises.
Is this event accessible?
The majority of vendors will be located in our driveway/parking lot and will be accessible to those using wheelchairs or mobility aids. Some activities will be in our front or back yard, requiring movement over grass. The first floor of the museum is accessible via ramp but there is no lift or elevator to the second floor. An accessible restroom is available inside the garage.
