Warrensville West Cemetery Gravestone Preservation Workshop

Are you fascinated with history and historic preservation? Does geology or genealogy interest you? Want to roll up your sleeves and learn a new skill? As part of the Warrensville West Cemetery Historic Preservation Plan, a partnership with the City of Shaker Heights, Shaker Historical Society, and Shaker Heights Public Library, experts will be training community volunteers in the skills needed to help preserve the cemetery’s gravestones. Join us for an engaging, hands-on workshop where you will learn:
Cemetery and Monument Safety
The geology of monument stone
Monument styles
Monument photography
Stone cleaning
Stone resetting
Pack your lunch, wear work clothes, bring work gloves, bring a folding chair if you have one, and meet us at 10 am for a pre-workshop presentation at The Dealership (3558 Lee Road). Masks will be required while we are inside the building and social distancing protocols will be required throughout the workshop. After a 30-minute presentation, we’ll head over to the cemetery and get to work. The event will take place rain or shine, so dress accordingly. All participants will be required to sign a waiver upon arrival.

Have you ever wondered how to start your own digital collection? In this session of Museum Methods for Home Collections: Going Digital, learn techniques used by museum professionals to digitize and preserve your photos and documents. Not only will digitizing your collection allow you to effortlessly share copies of your old family photos, but it is also easier to start and maintain a digital collection than you may imagine.
This webinar is designed to teach non-museum staff basic skills and techniques employed by museums and archives to preserve historical items. In this webinar, you will learn what terms like “digitization”, “born-digital”, and “digital preservation” mean and why it is important to digitally preserve your at-home collection. The webinar will include a demonstration of how to use a scanner or camera to digitize your physical items. By the end of the webinar, you will be able to start and maintain your own digital collection so that you can continue to enjoy it for years to come.

These tips will help you provide museum-quality care for your personal artifacts that will allow you to preserve and enjoy them for years to come.
This webinar is designed to teach non-museum staff basic skills and techniques employed by museums and archives to preserve historical artifacts. Viewers will learn about environmental hazards, archival storage, tips on caring for and cleaning a variety of materials, and observe live demonstrations of some of these techniques. The goal is to make museum preservation accessible to the general public so that they can use these techniques on personal collections.

SHS staff have extensive professional knowledge on how to best preserve your precious items and heirlooms. We can offer advice on how to preserve your objects as well as offer help with digitization. We can help get you on the right track to making sure your items and artifacts are preserved in your home for years to come!

Stop in and learn to spin yarn from our Education and Outreach Manager, Allison Henline. Spinning yarn for over a decade, Allison loves to show people the soothing and useful craft of spinning. Already know how to spin? Bring your wheel and some fiber along and join us for good conversation and company.
